What you will do
Johnson Controls is seeking a highly skilled Principal Electrical Applications Engineer to support the application, design, and sale of advanced HVAC chiller systems. This role is critical in delivering electrically compliant, high-performance solutions for commercial and mission-critical environments, including data centers.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in electrical systems, power distribution, and electrical code compliance and will serve as a key technical partner to sales, engineering, and product teams. This position plays a vital role in translating customer requirements into robust, safe, and optimized electrical designs.
This position is onsite at our Advanced Development and Engineering Center in New Freedom, PA. An alternative location is San Antonio, TX. Candidates should be commuting distance to either of these facilities, or open to relocation. Various relocation packages are available.
How you will do it
Provide pre-sale electrical engineering support to internal sales teams and external customers
Develop and review electrical system designs for HVAC chiller applications, including:
Power distribution layouts
One-line diagrams and control schematics
Equipment interface and integration
Apply and interpret NEC, UL, and applicable regulatory codes to ensure compliant solutions
Perform detailed engineering calculations, including:
Wire sizing and ampacity
Overcurrent protection and short circuit analysis
Electrical component sizing (breakers, fuses, transformers, contactors)
Support application of motor control systems, including VFDs, soft starters, and across-the-line starters
Collaborate with product engineering, contract engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure accurate execution of electrical designs
Evaluate project specifications and propose customized electrical solutions to meet customer requirements
Troubleshoot and resolve field electrical issues, commissioning challenges, and compliance questions
Provide expertise on power quality, grounding, harmonics, and system protection strategies
Develop and maintain technical documentation, standards, and application tools
Deliver training and technical guidance to internal teams and field personnel
Interface with suppliers to support electrical component selection and cost estimation
Participate in product development initiatives with a focus on electrical architecture and compliance
What you will need
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
5+ years of experience.
Knowledge of refrigeration systems.
Able to travel up to 20% for factory visits, customer site visits and field visits related to training.
Preferred
Commercial HVAC industry experience.
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $125,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
