What you will do
Johnson Controls is hiring Mechanical Engineer II to be a key member of the JCI-Synchrony Engineering team and supports design and development of the mechanical portion of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. The mechanical system includes radial bearings, thrust bearings, and instrumentation. The mechanical engineer may also be requested to design assembly and test tooling. This engineering function has significant interaction with the controls and software functions to ensure acceptable design of the AMB system. This position is based onsite in Salem, VA. Candidates must be commuting distance to the facility, or able to relocate.
How you will do it
Maintain a safe working environment and a commitment to safety excellence.
Develop CAD models of components and devices in support of new product designs.
Develop and edit CAD models of existing production components to improve current products.
Develop and perform experimental programs to support the development of new products and improvement of existing products.
Assist with appropriate testing, utilizing company procedures, methodology and other experimental design tools, and generate test reports.
Regularly communicate relevant results with engineering staff, customers, and other stakeholders.
Maintain appropriate records of work performed on development programs.
Maintain adherence to JCI and Synchrony product design and development procedures.
Specify and select computational engineering tools in collaboration with other Engineering staff in order to improve current and/or future product development programs.
Support the manufacturing team and/or assembly technicians as requested or needed.
Participate on cross-functional teams that manage projects from concept through first article manufacturing process.
Solve difficult problems at the engineering and production levels.
Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company via invention and patent applications.
Help resolve problems associated with returned materials.
What you will need
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
Design of active magnetic bearings, rotating element bearings, or other forms of mechanical bearings.
Familiarity with design and/or operation of high-speed motors.
Design and/or operation of other products with high-speed rotating shafts such as turbomachinery.
1-4 years of experience in a product development environment
Some combination of both R&D and manufacturing experience.
Experience designing assemblies consisting of both mechanical and electrical/electronic components.
